Forgive, But Don’t Forget?
Forgive and forget – it’s a cliché everyone has heard. It’s provided substance for dozens of songs and thousands of poems. But is it really the best advice?
Do we really need to forgive and forget? The forgiveness part of the equation is crucial. By forgiving, we can let go of the anger and bitterness. We can’t move forward in our relationships or begin the healing process without it.
But we don’t necessarily need to forget what happened. In fact, we need to remember to protect ourselves from letting it happen to us again. I may forgive a friend who apologizes for making critical remarks. But I’ll also choose to limit the time with this friend if it continues.
Let’s practice forgiveness today – it’ll improve our emotional, physical and spiritual health. But let’s also remember what happened, so we can protect ourselves in the future.
